A chatbot widget can still load today, while its installation route has already stopped accepting changes.
Two dates govern the migration
Shopify’s storefront script-tag documentation sets two deadlines. From October 1, 2026, apps cannot create or update script tags. Existing tags keep running until March 1, 2027, when Shopify stops injecting them into storefront pages.
This affects integrations that use that delivery method, including an AI widget if it loads through a script tag. It does not mean every Shopify AI app is affected. Identify how your actual integration loads before planning a replacement.
An older API version does not postpone the restriction
Shopify says the creation and update restrictions apply across API versions. Read and delete operations remain available. A working installed widget therefore does not prove that a new installation or configuration update will succeed.
App embeds need per-theme activation
Shopify directs storefront integrations toward app embed blocks in a theme app extension. The embed must be active on the theme the merchant publishes. Include a theme-switch test in the migration, not just a successful installation on one theme.
Apps created directly in the Shopify admin have separate constraints. Check the documentation’s section for apps that cannot use extensions before promising a drop-in replacement.
A migration checklist for one integration
- Identify the app owner and current loading method.
- Record the storefront behavior that must remain unchanged.
- Build or obtain the supported replacement.
- Enable it on a test theme.
- Test mobile display and the intended user action.
- Check a newly installed store and an existing installation.
- Verify activation after switching the published theme.
- Check for duplicate scripts and repeated analytics events.
- Keep a documented rollback until the replacement is accepted.
This checklist is a proposed test plan. We have not migrated your store or verified a particular vendor’s replacement. Ask the app provider which supported release removes its script-tag dependency.
Test the handoff without double-loading
Shopify warns that running the old tag and its replacement together can load the script twice. For a widget, check for repeated interface elements. For analytics, check whether a single action generates repeated events. Remove the old delivery route only after the replacement passes its acceptance tests.

Ask the vendor about the installation path
I would audit the loading method before renewing an integration that depends on storefront injection. Does your provider document an app-embed replacement and a theme-switch test?
