Shop MCP: A Shopping Agent Still Needs a Confirmed Purchase

Finding a product and buying it are different moments. A shopping agent needs to make the transition visible to the person paying.

What a single connection provides

Shopify’s Shop MCP announcement connects catalog search, product details, carts, and checkout through a hosted MCP server. Search works without an API key. Existing Catalog API integrations do not need to change.

The Shop MCP documentation says signed-out users can search and create carts or checkouts. Sign in to access saved addresses, Shop Pay, and account-related tools. A signed-in purchase through complete_checkout follows confirmation of the total and payment method.

Keep each merchant’s checkout separate

The documentation assigns each checkout to one merchant. Products from three stores therefore require three checkouts. A single conversational request does not create one combined merchant order.

That affects the experience you design. Show the seller and total for each purchase. If the shopper changes one item, make clear which checkout changed before asking for approval.

Test cancellation before a real payment

I would begin with a harmless product search and a checkout that stops before payment. Then use an approved test arrangement to verify the full purchase path.

  • Check the selected variant and seller.
  • Show the final total and payment method before completion.
  • Change one item and request fresh confirmation.
  • Test what happens when the shopper declines.
  • Verify checkout status before reporting success.

Only status: completed with an order confirms the purchase in the documentation. The launch note says there are no checkout webhooks at launch; status polling uses get_checkout. A tool timeout should not be reported as either a completed purchase or a definite failure without checking status.

Record the action the shopper approved

Keep enough application evidence to match the approval to the seller, items, and final amount. Avoid storing payment secrets in an ordinary conversation log. The agent’s summary and the checkout record should describe the same transaction.

No live purchase was made for this article. The proposed checks are an implementation review plan, not a claim that every MCP client exposes identical approval behavior.

Read the sources and plan your next step

Where would you place the final purchase confirmation in your shopping assistant?
