Suno
Suno generates complete songs from a prompt, including vocals and instrumentation, then provides tools to extend, remix, edit, upload audio, and organize a track.
About this product
Suno can turn “warm soul track about starting again, restrained verse, big final chorus” into two complete songs before a human band has found the key. That speed is genuinely useful. It lets a creator hear an idea instead of describing it and gives a songwriter something concrete to reject, keep, or rebuild.
The first generation is rarely the finished record. Lyrics can become awkward, arrangements may rush, and a convincing vocal can distract from a weak song. Suno is best treated as a sketchbook that happens to sing.
Prompt for a musical decision
A useful prompt defines genre or era without asking for a living artist’s identity, describes the emotional movement, names important instruments, and says something about structure or tempo. Custom lyrics give more control, but they need to be written for breath, repetition, and emphasis, not copied from an essay.
Generate a small number of directions and listen past the first chorus. Check whether the second verse develops the idea, whether the bridge earns its place, and whether the ending resolves. A catchy 20-second section can hide a song that has nowhere to go.
Suno’s release notes show a product that changes frequently, with newer music models and editing features arriving over time. Save important stems, mixes, prompts, lyrics, and creation dates outside the platform.
Editing and upload make it more than a slot machine
Users can extend songs, revise parts, and upload audio they are entitled to use. Suno’s audio-upload guide explains the feature and its constraints. A rough guitar or melody idea can provide a stronger anchor than a text description alone.
Suno Studio adds a more structured workspace for arranging and editing on eligible plans. It still does not replace a full digital audio workstation for detailed mixing, recording, plugin chains, automation, and mastering. Export what works and finish in the tool that gives you the control the release needs.
Never upload a commercial recording or another person’s isolated vocal because it is easy to access. Permission is required, and asking the system to imitate a recognizable singer can create both platform and legal problems.
Free is a test; paid changes the license
The official Suno pricing page lists a free plan with 50 credits per day. It is designed for non-commercial creation. Pro includes a larger monthly credit allowance, access to newer models and editing features, and commercial rights for eligible songs. Its annual rate is shown as $8 per month. Premier is shown at $24 per month on annual billing, with a much larger allowance and Studio access. Month-to-month prices are higher.
Credits pay for generations and related operations, so the useful output per plan depends on retries. A songwriter exploring hooks may keep far less material than a creator making short background cues.
Do not upgrade after a free song becomes popular and assume the license changed. Suno’s commercial-rights guidance says rights are not retroactive. Create the commercial version while an eligible subscription is active and keep the account record.
Commercial rights and copyright are different
Suno’s paid-plan guidance explains commercial use for songs made during a paid subscription. That permission is a contract with the platform. Copyright protection is a question of law, human authorship, jurisdiction, and the specific work.
If a release matters, add meaningful human contribution: original lyrics, arrangement decisions, performed parts, editing, mixing, and production. Run a similarity check with experienced ears. Clear any uploaded material and be cautious with prompts that request a direct imitation. Distribution services and collecting societies may also have their own disclosure rules.
A fair song test
- Write one original chorus and a short musical brief.
- Generate two directions, then choose based on the entire song.
- Revise one weak section instead of restarting blindly.
- Export the chosen track and listen on headphones, phone, and speakers.
- Record credits, edits, rights status, and what a human must still finish.
This shows whether Suno helps you make music or merely keeps you generating.
My verdict
Suno is a remarkable tool for hearing an idea quickly. It suits demos, songwriting experiments, short-form content, playful music, and early creative direction. The editing and Studio features make it increasingly practical beyond the first prompt.
Use the free plan to learn, not to create a track you expect to monetize. Subscribe before making commercial versions, preserve the evidence, and bring human authorship and production to work that matters. A generated song can be the spark; it should not be the end of the decision-making.
