Microsoft’s MAI Image 2.7 preview focuses on editing existing images. Text-to-image generation is planned, and product access needs a separate check.

Microsoft Starts MAI Image 2.7 With an Image-Editing Preview

A useful image editor changes the lighting without quietly altering the object you want to keep.

Microsoft announced MAI Image 2.7 on October 27, starting with an image-editing preview. Its release post describes stronger control over changes such as relighting a scene and altering text or symbols.

Microsoft says text-to-image generation is coming soon. That places the current announcement around editing an existing image, with broader generation still ahead.

Control includes what stays untouched

An edit has two targets: the requested change and the content that should remain stable. A relighting result can look attractive while altering a label, removing a small object, or changing the subject’s shape.

For a product image, those unintended changes can make the result unsuitable even when the new lighting looks convincing. That is why I would evaluate preservation separately from visual appeal.

Use a repeatable edit brief

Choose one image you have permission to edit and write a narrow request. For example: move the apparent light source to the left while preserving every printed character and the number of objects.

ObservationWhat to compare
Requested changeDid the lighting move in the requested direction?
TextAre the same characters still present and legible?
ObjectsDo the count, shape and placement remain consistent?
RepeatabilityDoes a second run preserve the same details?
Proposed evaluation criteria for controlled image editing; these are not MAI Image 2.7 test results.

Keep the original image and output together. A side-by-side comparison makes small unwanted changes easier to spot than judging the result from memory.

Verify the model before testing it

Microsoft reports strong positions on image-editing leaderboards, but we have not independently verified those placements. They should remain attributed company claims.

The announcement’s linked playground URL names MAI Image 2.6. Before recording a result as a 2.7 test, confirm which model the interface actually selects. We have not established a general API release, pricing, or regional availability for 2.7.
