A laptop that follows the task you started on your phone sounds useful. Whether it is worth $899 depends on what crosses over, what runs locally, and what still needs the cloud.
Google opened Googlebook preorders on September 21, 2026. The new laptop category combines an Android foundation with desktop elements from ChromeOS, a desktop Chrome browser, Android apps and Gemini-focused features. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo are in the initial hardware lineup. The US starting price is $899; retail availability starts October 4 in the United States and October 5 in six other announced markets. The AI features that make Googlebook different.
Magic Pointer brings Gemini to content near the cursor after the user summons it. Google’s examples include turning a training plan on a web page into calendar entries, examining a suspicious email, and combining selected images. Rambler turns spoken notes into structured writing. Create My Widget generates a small desktop widget from a description. These are interface workflows, not proof that every app or site will expose the same actions.
Google says the machine is designed for Gemini Intelligence and its processors include dedicated NPUs capable of more than 45 TOPS. That figure describes a hardware capability, not a measured speed for Magic Pointer or a guarantee that every Gemini request stays on the device. Before buying for privacy or offline use, ask which feature runs locally, what data is sent to a service, and what continues to work without a network connection.
Android handoff may matter more than the AI label.
Continue is meant to pick up a phone task from the laptop taskbar. The Files app can show phone files and photos, while Cast My Apps streams a phone app into a desktop window. Google also says setup can bring settings, passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages from an Android phone with end-to-end encryption. Buyers should check the supported phone, app, and account combinations before assuming every mobile workflow moves across unchanged.
A practical store test is to begin the same task on a phone and finish it on the laptop: one browser page, one file and one mobile-only app. Measure how many steps the handoff saves and whether edits remain in sync. That will tell you more than a processor TOPS number.
What developers and agent users actually get
Google says Googlebook includes Antigravity, its AI development platform, plus a full terminal and an isolated Linux environment powered by a pKVM hypervisor. It describes the isolation as a way to run Linux developer tools and autonomous agents. Google makes the security architecture and certification claims; an agent still needs appropriate repository, credential, and network permissions inside its workspace.
For a coding buyer, the decision is less about whether an agent icon is preinstalled and more about the daily toolchain: can the Linux environment run the needed dependencies, reach the right repositories, and keep secrets out of the agent’s view? Price, countries, and what the bundle does not prove
Google lists a US starting price of $899, with 12 months of Google AI Pro and 5 TB of cloud storage included. It also lists promotional periods for YouTube Premium, Photoshop and GeForce NOW, and up to 10 years of Googlebook OS updates. Those inclusions can reduce first-year software costs, but buyers should calculate the second-year subscription price separately rather than treating the bundle as permanent.
Preorders are open through Google and selected retailers. Google says shelves open October 4 in the US, then October 5 in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. Local model selection and prices can differ. Battery life of up to 14 hours, material quality, and performance remain manufacturer or Google claims until independent reviews test specific configurations.

Googlebook is most intriguing for someone already moving work between Android and a laptop, or a developer who wants a managed desktop with Linux tooling. If your purchase depends on offline AI, professional app compatibility, battery endurance, or strict data locality, wait for independent tests of the exact model. Google’s shared-memory AI permissions story is a useful reminder that an attractive continuous workflow still needs a precise account and data boundary.
