Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent for the terminal. It can inspect a repository, edit files, run commands, explain code, and help carry a task from diagnosis to a tested change.
About this product
Claude Code makes the most sense when the work is already sitting in a repository. Open a terminal in the project, describe the outcome, and it can trace the relevant files, explain what it found, edit the code, run a test, and respond to the result. That is a more useful test than asking a chatbot to write an isolated function with no idea how the rest of the application works.
I would reach for it when I need a capable second pair of eyes on an unfamiliar codebase, a stubborn bug, or a change that touches several files. I would not give it broad permission and walk away. The value comes from a tight loop: Claude investigates, you challenge the plan, it makes a bounded change, and the repository’s own checks decide whether that change is credible.
What the terminal workflow changes
Claude Code can search the repository, read project instructions, edit files, and execute commands from the same session. Anthropic’s setup guide covers local installation and authentication, while its CLI reference documents commands, flags, session behavior, and permission options.
That shared context matters. Suppose a checkout error begins in a React form but comes from validation in an API route and a database constraint. Claude Code can follow that path instead of guessing from one pasted error message. It can also inspect a test suite before proposing a fix, which usually produces a better change than generating tests after the implementation is finished.
The useful habit is to begin with investigation. Ask it to identify the execution path, list the files it expects to touch, and name the tests that should prove the fix. Only then move to edits. This exposes shaky assumptions early and gives you a reviewable contract for the task.
Where it earns its place
Repository-scale work is the obvious strength: refactors, migrations, test repair, documentation tied to live code, and first-pass code review. It is also good at orientation. A developer joining a project can ask how authentication works or where a domain object is transformed, then verify the answer by opening the cited files.
Claude Code supports project-level instruction files, so a team can state its commands, conventions, directory boundaries, and definition of done once. Model Context Protocol connections can bring in approved tools or data. Both features are powerful, but both deserve maintenance. Stale instructions create confident mistakes, and an overly broad MCP connection expands what the agent can reach.
For a small task, the terminal agent may be unnecessary. An editor completion or ordinary chat is faster for a five-line function you already understand. Claude Code becomes worthwhile when reading, changing, and verifying the surrounding system is most of the work.
Pricing and the limit people miss
Claude Code is included with Claude’s paid plans. On Anthropic’s pricing page, Pro is $20 per month on monthly billing, with a lower effective monthly price on an annual plan. Higher Max tiers start at $100 per month. Teams can also buy seats. Developers using an Anthropic Console account pay API rates instead of receiving a flat allowance.
There is an important wrinkle: Claude and Claude Code share usage limits when you sign in with a Pro or Max subscription. A long coding session can therefore affect how much Claude chat you have left until the limit resets. Anthropic’s plan guide also warns that an API key in your environment can route usage to separate API billing. Check the active account before a large run.
I would start with Pro for regular individual work and watch real usage. Max only makes sense after limits interrupt valuable sessions often enough to justify the jump.
Permission is a feature, not an inconvenience
A coding agent can delete a file, install a package, modify configuration, or run a command with side effects. Keep approval prompts on until you understand the proposed action. Work on a branch, inspect the diff, and never treat a successful command as proof that the change is correct.
Secrets need the same care. Exclude credential files, avoid pasting production data, and review what connected tools can expose. For consequential repositories, require human review and the normal CI pipeline. Claude Code can accelerate that process; it does not replace it.
A useful 30-minute trial
- Choose a real, reproducible bug in a repository with tests.
- Ask Claude Code to investigate without editing and cite the relevant files.
- Have it propose the smallest fix and the checks that should pass.
- Approve only the necessary edits and commands.
- Review the diff yourself, then run the project’s full validation.
If the investigation saves time and the final diff is easier to review than a manual first attempt, the tool is doing useful work. If you spend the session correcting invented architecture or undoing broad changes, tighten the instructions and reduce the task.
My verdict
Claude Code is one of the stronger ways to use an AI model on an actual software project because it can participate in the entire edit-and-test loop. Its best role is a fast, persistent collaborator operating inside boundaries set by a developer.
Use it for repository understanding, multi-file changes, debugging, and mechanical work that still benefits from reasoning. Keep ownership of architecture, security, review, and release decisions. The combination is far more dependable than either an unsupervised agent or a chatbot working from snippets.
