Gemini

Google Gemini is an AI assistant for research, writing, coding, image generation, and work across Gmail, Drive, Docs, Android, and the web.

About this product

Gemini is the AI assistant I would test first if most of my work already lives in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, or Android. Its biggest advantage is not a single benchmark score. It is the short distance between asking a question and doing something useful with the answer.

That does not make Gemini the automatic winner for everyone. Google’s model names, limits, and plan bundles move quickly, and the Gemini app is not the same product as Google AI Studio or Vertex AI. This review focuses on the consumer Gemini app and the features a freelancer, creator, student, or small team can use today.

What Gemini actually does

Gemini handles ordinary AI chat, but stopping there misses most of the product. It can work with documents, spreadsheets, images, video, audio, code folders, and GitHub repositories. You can ask for a summary, compare files, turn notes into a plan, inspect a codebase, or create a chart from spreadsheet data.

Deep Research is the feature I would show someone who thinks Gemini is just Google’s version of ChatGPT. It creates a research plan, searches across sources, and produces a longer report with links you can inspect. Google Search is included by default. You can also bring in uploaded files, NotebookLM notebooks, Gmail, or Drive when those sources are available and connected.

Canvas gives the answer somewhere to go. It can turn a rough prompt into a document, slide deck, small app, quiz, or code project, then let you revise the result in place. For code, Canvas includes a preview, console, and change history. That is far more practical than copying a half-finished answer into five other tabs.

The Google connection is the real reason to use it

If you connect Google Workspace, Gemini can find and summarize information from Gmail, Docs, and Drive. It can also work with Calendar events, Tasks, Keep notes, and other supported services. A personal account needs the relevant Connected Apps settings enabled. Work and school accounts may depend on what the Workspace administrator allows.

This is where Gemini feels different from a standalone chatbot. You can ask it to find the email that contains a project deadline, check the related document, and help prepare the next step. I would still verify anything important before sending or scheduling it, but the workflow is genuinely useful.

Where Gemini earns its place

  • Research that needs a readable report and links back to the sources.
  • Large documents, spreadsheets, meeting files, and mixed media that are painful to review manually.
  • Writing and revision inside Canvas when a chat answer needs several rounds of editing.
  • Code questions that benefit from a repository or folder instead of an isolated snippet.
  • Work that already starts in Google Search, Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, or Android.

The free version is enough to test all of those workflows. I would not upgrade on day one. First, give Gemini a real task that normally costs you 30 minutes and see whether the result survives your own fact-check.

Where it still gets awkward

Google changes model names and usage rules often enough that old Gemini reviews age badly. The app may offer several models or thinking levels, and the best choice is not always obvious. A faster model is usually fine for summaries and brainstorming; harder coding, math, and long-file work may benefit from the Pro model or a higher thinking setting.

Gemini can also give a confident answer that is wrong. Deep Research links make verification easier, but a citation does not prove that the sentence beside it is accurate. Open the source when a claim affects money, health, legal work, or something you plan to publish.

There is another source of confusion: the Gemini app, Gemini inside Workspace, Google AI Studio, and Vertex AI share model technology but have different interfaces, limits, data terms, and audiences. If you are building an application, start with AI Studio or Vertex AI documentation. This listing is about using Gemini as an assistant.

Gemini pricing without the mystery

Gemini has a free tier, so the real starting price is $0, not $55. Google says the free app has standard usage limits. Paid Google AI plans raise those limits and bundle storage or access to other Google products.

On Google’s United States pricing page when this review was checked, Google AI Plus was $9.99 per month and Google AI Pro was $19.99 per month. Plus included twice the standard Gemini usage and 2 TB of storage. Pro included four times the standard usage, access to the Pro model and Deep Research, and 5 TB of storage. Google AI Ultra is the high-limit option, but its price and benefits vary by market.

Plans, promotions, and regional availability change, so check the current Google One pricing page before paying. My rule is simple: stay free until a limit interrupts work you actually care about.

Check the privacy settings before connecting your inbox

Gemini can become much more useful when it can reach your email and files. That also means you should understand the account settings first. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says some collected data may be reviewed by trained human reviewers when Keep Activity is on. Google tells users not to enter confidential information they would not want reviewed or used to improve its services.

You can turn off Keep Activity or use temporary chats. Google says temporary chats are retained for 72 hours for response and safety purposes and are not used to train its AI models. Business data may be covered by different Workspace terms, so teams should follow their administrator’s policy rather than assuming a personal Gemini setting applies to company information.

A useful 20-minute Gemini test

  1. Upload a real document or spreadsheet that you already understand.
  2. Ask Gemini to find one decision, one risk, and the evidence for each.
  3. Run a Deep Research report on a topic you would normally search by hand.
  4. Move the result into Canvas and revise it until it is usable.
  5. Check every important claim against the original file or linked source.

This test tells you more than a leaderboard. You will see whether Gemini understands your material, whether its citations hold up, and whether the Google integrations remove enough busywork to matter.

My verdict

Gemini makes the strongest case for itself when Google already runs your day. Deep Research is good for getting oriented, Canvas turns answers into working material, and Connected Apps can remove a surprising amount of tab switching.

I would not pay for Gemini just to have another chat box. I would pay when the free limits interrupt a repeatable workflow involving research, long files, coding, or Workspace. Start free, test it with your own messy material, and upgrade only when you can point to the time it saves.
