HeyGen

HeyGen creates presenter videos, custom digital twins, voiceovers, translations, and localized marketing or training content without a traditional camera crew.

About this product

HeyGen is most useful when the presenter must appear again and again: product updates, onboarding, sales messages, lessons, or localized versions of the same script. A custom digital twin can turn one consented recording into a repeatable production asset.

The product is less convincing when it is used to avoid editorial work. A lifelike presenter delivering vague claims is still a weak video. Script, evidence, pronunciation, pace, and disclosure determine whether the result feels useful or synthetic.

Start with the script, not the avatar

Write for speech. Use short sentences, mark difficult names, and keep one idea per scene. Read the script aloud before spending credits. If the sentence is awkward in your own mouth, the avatar will not rescue it.

Stock avatars are the fastest route for a test. A custom digital twin makes sense when the same person needs to deliver many approved messages. HeyGen also offers photo avatars and newer Avatar IV and V generation for more expressive motion.

Generate a short sample first. Watch the eyes, hands, transitions, lip movement, and emphasis on numbers. Small errors become more noticeable in a five-minute video.

Translation can multiply one recording

HeyGen can dub and translate a video, with optional lip synchronization. This is one of the clearest business uses because the original performance, framing, and brand can carry into several markets.

Do not publish a language no one on the team can review. Names, currency, dates, legal qualifications, and humor often fail before ordinary grammar. Give a fluent reviewer the translated script and the rendered video because timing can change meaning.

The current pricing page says Creator includes more than 175 languages and dialects. Availability and quality vary, so test the exact language and voice rather than buying from the count.

Consent is part of the production workflow

HeyGen’s Trust and Safety page says creators own their custom avatars but must have the legal rights and explicit consent of the person represented. The person can request removal of their likeness.

Keep written permission that covers the intended channels, markets, duration, and kinds of message. A staff member who agreed to a training video did not necessarily agree to a political advertisement or an indefinite brand persona.

Tell viewers when an AI presenter could mislead them about what was filmed. Do not clone a voice or face from public footage without authorization. Review the current moderation policy before sensitive or regulated content.

Pricing now uses one credit balance

Free supports three short videos per month. Creator costs $29 monthly or $24 per month on annual billing and includes 600 credits, 1080p, voice cloning, and videos up to 30 minutes. Pro starts at $49 with 1,000 credits, 4K output, and translation script editing.

Business starts at $149 per month with 1,500 credits, five custom digital twins, 60-minute videos, SSO, collaboration, and additional seats at $20 each. Enterprise is custom.

HeyGen’s credit guide shows that different features consume different amounts. Estimate a real monthly mix of avatar minutes, translation, and Video Agent work before selecting a tier.

A useful HeyGen test

  1. Create a 45-second script with one name, one number, and one call to action.
  2. Render it with a stock avatar and review movement and pronunciation.
  3. Translate it into one language a fluent reviewer can check.
  4. If using a digital twin, complete consent and document permitted uses.
  5. Calculate the credits required for your actual monthly output.

This test reveals delivery quality, localization effort, governance, and cost in one small project.

My verdict

HeyGen is a capable production tool for repeated presenter video and localization. Creator is enough for many solo marketers and educators, while Pro and Business are mainly about higher-quality output, more credits, and team controls.

Use the free plan to test the exact voice, language, and avatar style you need. Treat consent as an asset with limits rather than a checkbox. Have a human watch every final render before it represents a person or company.
