Downloading a base checkpoint is the beginning of an assistant deployment, with training and licensing decisions still ahead.
Baidu released ERNIE 5.5 Flash Base on November 5. The public weights offer developers a way to adapt or study the model. The release is a pretrained base checkpoint. Baidu says a post-trained version is forthcoming, but it didn’t give a release date in the announcement.
A foundation still needs an application plan
The model card describes FP8 and BF16 weights and reports 280 billion total parameters, with 14 billion active. These are Baidu’s specifications. We have not downloaded the weights or measured memory use, speed, or answer quality.
Active parameter counts alone do not establish the hardware needed to load a model. A deployment must account for the stored weights and the chosen inference configuration. The rounded total in the marketing description also differs from the stored parameter metadata, so it should not be used as a precise memory estimate.
A base checkpoint needs an evaluation plan suited to its state. Teams seeking a ready-made conversational assistant should distinguish this release from a post-trained model. Test instructions, output constraints, and tool behavior before assigning it the same role as an existing assistant.
Read the territory clause before planning commercial use
The published custom license defines a Territory that excludes the European Union, the United Kingdom and South Korea. Its rights are tied to that definition. The public download page therefore should not be described as permission for unrestricted worldwide use.
For commercial use within the license’s scope, the document sets different conditions around US$50 million in related annual revenue. At or below that threshold, it requires a one-time notice before first use and attribution. Above it, it requires prior written commercial authorization. Other terms still apply.
The revenue definition uses consecutive 12-month periods and aggregates entities under common control. It is not a threshold based simply on profit or funds raised. Read those definitions with the intended entity and deployment in mind. This article reports the document’s terms without determining permission for a particular business.
Separate three decisions before spending on infrastructure
| Decision | Evidence to establish | Why it comes first |
|---|---|---|
| Permitted use | Territory, use case and commercial terms | A public weights link does not resolve the custom license |
| Deployable configuration | Supported weight format and hardware plan | Active parameters alone do not specify memory needs |
| Application readiness | Adaptation and task-level evaluation | A base checkpoint has not completed the announced post-training path |
For a team with a specific adaptation project, the weights create a concrete artifact to evaluate. For a team that needs a hosted assistant immediately, the base-versus-post-trained distinction may be decisive. Baidu’s benchmark claims still need to be read under its stated conditions.
