Windsurf
Windsurf is the AI coding editor now transitioning into Devin Desktop, with agentic code changes, planning, terminal tools, web search, checkpoints, and deployment.
About this product
A normal Windsurf review would already be out of date. Cognition has moved the product’s public site, pricing, and documentation into the Devin ecosystem, and the editor is now described as Devin Desktop. Cascade, the agent many developers associate with Windsurf, remains part of that experience.
That transition does not erase the product’s value, but it changes what a buyer should verify. Old articles about Codeium credits, Windsurf seats, or plan limits may describe a service that no longer matches the checkout page.
Cascade remains the working center
The current Cascade documentation describes Code and Chat modes, planning, tool calls, voice input, checkpoints, real-time awareness, linter integration, and simultaneous sessions. Code mode can modify the repository. Chat mode is better for questions and proposals you want to review before inserting.
For a bug, give Cascade the failing behavior, relevant test, and definition of done. Ask it to inspect before editing. A bounded task creates a useful diff. “Improve the whole application” gives an agent too much room to replace code that was not part of the problem.
Planning and todo lists help with longer changes, but they are not independent verification. Run the tests yourself and inspect configuration, dependency, database, and authentication changes line by line.
Checkpoints are useful, but Git still matters
Cascade can create named checkpoints and revert generated changes. That is convenient inside a session. The docs warn that a revert is itself irreversible, so it should not replace a clean Git branch and commit history.
Start risky work on a branch. Commit the known-good state. Let the agent change one concern, run tests, and review the diff. If two Cascade sessions may touch the same files, use worktrees so their edits do not race.
Repository rules, workflows, skills, and AGENTS.md files can teach the agent how a project is built and tested. Keep those instructions short, specific, and versioned with the code.
Tools make the editor powerful and consequential
Cascade can search the repository and web, run terminal commands, use MCP servers, install packages, and deploy supported applications. The same access that saves time can also modify files, execute untrusted scripts, or send data to an external service.
Use .codeiumignore for sensitive paths. Keep credentials outside the repository. Review a package before allowing installation. Grant MCP servers the smallest permissions that solve the task. Start deployment tests with a preview environment, not the production branch.
The official usage guide says self-serve plans moved to a new quota model in March 2026. That is another reason not to rely on old prompt-credit comparisons.
Current pricing belongs to Devin
The live pricing page lists Free at $0 with a light agent quota, limited model availability, unlimited inline edits, and unlimited Tab completions. Pro costs $20 per month and adds frontier models, higher quotas, cloud agents, and extra usage at API pricing. Max costs $200 per month for much higher quotas.
The Teams plan costs $80 per month plus $40 per full developer seat. Enterprise is custom. A paid allowance refreshes daily and weekly, and task cost varies with the model and complexity.
Choose Pro only after measuring one repository workflow. Max is for a developer who repeatedly exhausts Pro on work that earns back the difference.
A fair transition-era test
- Download from the current Devin page and confirm the account and plan shown.
- Open a test repository with no secrets.
- Ask Cascade to diagnose a known failing test before editing.
- Review the diff, run the complete test suite, and inspect usage.
- Check ignore rules and data terms before adding private work.
This tests the current product instead of the Windsurf remembered from an older review.
My verdict
Windsurf’s core agentic editor remains capable, particularly for developers who want planning, repository awareness, terminal work, and checkpoints in one place. Cascade can be a productive collaborator when the task and permissions are narrow.
The brand transition is now part of the buying decision. Treat Devin’s current page as authoritative, disregard old credit tables, and verify privacy and billing under the account you receive. Good Git habits and human review remain essential.
