Bolt.new
Bolt.new creates full-stack web applications in the browser from conversation, with editable code, databases, hosting, GitHub integration, previews, and team workspaces.
About this product
Bolt.new is good at turning a web app brief into something you can click before the meeting ends. The editor, runtime, database, and hosting are close enough that the first useful version does not require a local setup or a separate deployment account.
That fast loop can hide the growing cost of context. Bolt needs to understand the project files on later requests, so a sprawling codebase and one long conversation can consume tokens much faster than a small first screen.
Build the smallest complete journey first
Describe one user, one action, and one stored result. Ask Bolt to plan the routes and data model before styling every page. A completed signup-to-result journey exposes more important problems than six beautiful empty dashboards.
The code is visible, so use it. Check package choices, types, environment variables, and error handling. If Bolt adds authentication, test both a permitted and forbidden request against the server. Hiding a button is not access control.
Use a new chat or a clear milestone when the conversation becomes cluttered. Provide the files needed for the next change rather than asking the model to reconsider the entire application.
Bolt Cloud removes setup and adds operations
Bolt includes hosting and databases. The official hosting guide lists up to 10 GB of bandwidth and 333,333 monthly requests on Free. Pro includes up to 30 GB and one million requests, with additional capacity available.
Those limits apply across the account, not separately to every published site. A portfolio, client preview, and production app can share the same allowance. Watch traffic and know which project is responsible before upgrading.
For a real application, configure a custom domain, backups, error reporting, and usage alerts. Test database rules and recovery. Know what happens when hosting or database capacity is exhausted.
GitHub and version history are safety rails
Connect GitHub before the project feels finished. The repository makes code review, branching, and outside deployment possible. Commit the last working state before asking for a database migration or a broad refactor.
Bolt’s 2026 release notes describe visual Version History for previewing and restoring earlier versions. That is helpful for quick recovery. Git remains the better source of truth for a project another developer must maintain.
Never put production secrets in a prompt or checked-in file. Use the platform’s secret controls, restrict scopes, and rotate any credential that appears in generated output or history.
Token pricing rewards project discipline
The current pricing page gives Free one million monthly tokens with a 300,000-token daily limit. Pro starts at $25 per month with ten million tokens, no daily limit, custom domains, private sharing, additional capacity, and no Bolt badge. Teams starts at $30 per member per month.
Paid subscription tokens can roll over for one additional month while the subscription remains active. Bolt explains that most use comes from synchronizing the project file system with the model. Large files and repeated broad prompts can therefore make a simple change expensive.
Measure tokens per accepted feature. Delete unused assets, keep requests focused, and do direct code or visual edits when a prompt adds no value.
A practical Bolt test
- Build one database-backed workflow with a normal and restricted user.
- Connect GitHub and mark the first working version.
- Publish, then test traffic, forms, errors, and mobile layout.
- Inspect token use after a small change and a broad change.
- Write down the backup and recovery path before adding real users.
The result should be maintainable code with a known operating cost. A convincing preview is not enough.
My verdict
Bolt.new is a strong browser-first builder for prototypes, internal tools, and focused web products. Hosting and databases make it faster to reach a live result than a code generator that stops at a folder of files.
Its token model favors small, deliberate projects. Keep GitHub connected, watch shared hosting limits, and have a developer review permissions and data flows. The free plan is generous enough to learn whether that workflow suits you.
