A shorter tool result helps only when the agent can still recover the detail that changes its decision. Test that recovery before optimizing a long session.
What the repository describes
Context Mode’s repository describes an MCP server that keeps large tool outputs outside the main context and retrieves indexed material when needed. It also describes session records in SQLite. The project appeared in GitHub Trending during our October 13 scan; that is an attention signal, not an adoption measurement.
The license is Elastic License 2.0. Describe the project as source-available and review the terms for your intended use. Its source visibility does not make it an unrestricted hosted-service component.
Choose one detail a summary is likely to miss
Create a harmless document with a common rule and one clearly marked exception. Ask the agent a question that depends on the exception. Compare the result with and without the context tool, using the same input and acceptance criteria.
Then ask for the location of the supporting passage. A correct answer without recoverable evidence leaves the reviewer with another verification task. Save the retrieved excerpt and compare it with the original file.
- Record the tool and client versions.
- Keep the source document identical between runs.
- Write the expected answer before starting.
- Check that the exception survives retrieval.
- Record token use and failed attempts.
- Inspect retained session data after the trial.
Measure completed work as well as context size
The repository promotes large reductions in raw context. We have not reproduced those figures. For an evaluation, count accepted answers and correction time alongside the amount of text entering context. Compression that removes a needed exception can increase rework.
Use disposable material before allowing a new integration to read a real project. Review the exact client configuration, hooks, and local storage behavior. A claim about local processing does not establish the data path of every model or tool in the surrounding workflow.
The Copilot telemetry guide covers a related data boundary. Our review-queue explainer suggests outcome measures for agent trials.
Keep the original passage within reach
I would accept a smaller context only after the agent can retrieve the evidence a reviewer needs. Which document exception would make a useful first test in your project?
Repository and license checked on October 13, 2026. This is a proposed evaluation guide; the tool was not installed or benchmarked.
